The countryside and coastline:

As you can see from the images on this website (more can be seen on the PM Studios Photo Gallery), this a a beautiful part of the country: rolling hills and dramatic mountains - without the harsh ruggedness of north Wales. You can see why it is attractive to tourists wanting to 'get away from it all'.

The County Council Tourism site gives more details, but below are some of our favourites:

Cors Caron: This is a large flat peat bog to the north of Tregaron. Many birdwatchers come to see the wildlife. A new boardwalk giving a circular route has been built which takes you to a large birdwatching hide.

Devil's Bridge: Here there are 3 bridges built one on top of another. The first was believed to have been built for the monks at the nearby Stata Florida Abbey. The bridges go over a small river which then drops in a series of beautiful water falls.

Rheidol Railway: This is a preserved narrow gauge railway that mostly runs steam trains (in season) from Aberystwyth to Devils Bridge. At the right season, the bluebells are spectacular along parts of the route.

Walks and rides: Ceredigion has many footpaths and bridleways. Parts of the course of the old Cambrian Railway have been made into cyclepaths. Much (but not all) of the route from Tregaron to Aberystwyth has been converted. The tourist offices can give full details.

Abbeys: There are two close by. Strata Florida about 10-12 miles to the north and Talley about 30 miles to the south. Although both are ruins, Talley still has some high arches, but Strata Florida has the 'visitor centre'.

Ceredigion Coast: This is an interesting coastline with many small coves and bays. We like Mwnt and Pen Bryn. We have seen dolphins and seals at Mwnt. If you are looking for amusement parks, try Blackpool!

Ceredigion Museum: This is a small museum in Aberystwyth housed in the old Coliseum theatre. Amongst the displays are old farming and kitchen equipment and valve radios and TVs.
